Vairocana (Vairochana): “He Who Is Like the Sun”
Vairocana is one of the five transcendent Buddhas. Vairocana is depicted making the mudra of supreme wisdom. His symbols are the Dharma-Chakra (Dharma Wheel--Dharma teaching) and the sun.
White Vairocana (Tib. RNam-par snang-mdzad), the ‘Illuminator’, is the Lord of the Tathagata (Buddha) Family of the center or east. His consort is Lochana, ‘she who can extinguish ignorance’, and his main Bodhisattva is Akashagarbha or Samantabhadra. Vairocana represents the aggregate of consciousness, the element of water (or space), the poison of ignorance, and mirror-like wisdom. His seed syllable is a white ‘Om’, which corresponds to the aspect of ‘body’ located at the crown.
